Modalities in Astrology: Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable

The modality breakdown of my birth chart

I initiate with purpose and passion

I stay the course with determination and dedication

I know when to let go and move on

The modalities are another fundamental part of astrology. I have already covered the elements. Above I have included an image of both the breakdown of the modalities and elements in my birth chart. The C stands for cardinal, F for fixed, and M for mutable.

If you look at the above table, you will see that I have fixed as the dominant modality, followed closely by cardinal, and last by mutable. However, I always give more weight to the personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars), so take that into account when you look at your own makeup as well.

Signs by modality:

Cardinal: Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn

Fixed: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius

Mutable: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces

The Zodiac begins with Aries, the Spring Equinox. Aries, Taurus, and Gemini are the signs of the Spring. Cancer marks the Summer Solstice and the beginning of Summer. Cancer, Leo, and Virgo are the signs of the Summer. Libra marks the Autumn Equinox and the beginning of Fall. Libra, Scorpio, and Sagittarius are the signs of the Fall. Capricorn marks the Winter Solstice and the beginning of Winter. Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces are the signs of the Winter. Cardinal marks the beginning of the seasons. Fixed marks the midpoint of the seasons. Mutable marks the transition from one season into the next.

Cardinal signs are initiators, they start something new. The Cardinal signs mark the beginning of the seasons. Fixed signs are sustainers. They mark the middle of the seasons. Mutable signs are transitions. They mark the end of the seasons.

By understanding the modalities, you can see where you might need some extra work. Maybe you have a lot of cardinal energy, so beginning projects is not a problem for you, but you have little fixed energy, so maintaining momentum is hard for you. Or you have an excess of fixed energy, so you can get set in your ways and not know when to move on to something new. Or you have a lot of mutable energy, so you have a harder time concentrating and focusing your energy. It is all perfect. In knowing how your energies work, you then have the awareness to make the adjustments necessary to utilize what you have to the fullest.
