Pluto Square Eris: Becoming the Butterfly

Pluto square Eris: We can be butterflies. Created in Adobe Spark Post by Kandy Williams

Pluto has been in a closing square with Eris since 2020, and though people are familiar with Pluto’s transformative and even destructive energy, not many people are familiar with Eris’s transformative and even destructive energy. Eris is a planet that was discovered in 2005, and because of its discovery, Pluto got demoted to a dwarf planet. Leave it up to Eris to create disruption in the status quo, because that is her energy. Eris is a spiritual warrior for authenticity, and when there is deception, lies, and shadow, Eris will expose it for you to see. It won’t be pretty. It never is to dig up what is buried. But if you want to work with the shadow, you have to see it first. In fact, if you don’t work with the shadow, you will get the world we currently have. If you don’t know what I am talking about, just take a good look around.

I wrote a blog post about Pluto and Eris. Please read them for more information on both of these powerful planets. Pluto has been deeply transforming Capricorn institutions, structures, and reality as we know it since 2008. And we dearly need that Plutonic energy digging up the shadow, because shadow Capricorn has been alive and well for perhaps thousands of years: power at all costs, hierarchy, survival of the richest, and repression of the feminine principle on all levels. This is completely bereft of its opposite sign, Cancer, which is home, family, roots, nurturing, care, compassion, and creating a safe environment.

Eris has been in Aries since 1926. Eris is deeply transforming the way we express our authenticity. Aries gets pegged as a narcissistic and self-centered sign. That is shadow Aries, and there is no doubt that we are seeing that playing out throughout the human experience as well. Aries without the balance of Libra (the sign of our relationship with others) is out of balance. The rise of the shadow we’re seeing everywhere in life is a symptom of humans being out of balance. But Pluto square Eris is exacerbating the symptoms because Pluto and Eris demand transformation.

A caterpillar spins its own destruction as it spins its cocoon. It is completely destroyed. But on the other side of that destruction is a beautiful butterfly. If we choose to work with Pluto and Eris consciously, we too can spin our cocoons, knowing that we will emerge after our destruction as beautiful butterflies. Or we can simply be destroyed. We have something caterpillars don’t have: we have the consciousness to actively participate in our own evolution. Life comes with pain, but it is a choice to suffer. Humanity is being faced with a lot of shadow. We have allowed ourselves to get way out of balance. We are, as a species, self-centered and narcissistic, completely disregarding nature, the planet, and all of the other life we share this planet with. It is called the web of life with good reason. It is a web, and every strand is integral to its integrity. And we are not separate from the web. We are a part of nature, not apart from nature.

We can let the way things have been and the lives we have known up until now be destroyed so that we can emerge transformed. We can tell a new human story. We can build a better world, a better world that celebrates and promotes life. We can be butterflies. We can bring the feminine back into balance with the masculine on every level, metaphysical and physical. But we have to look at the shadow, acknowledge it, and work with it. Ignoring it will not make it go away. Pluto square Eris will not let us get away with b.s.
