Spring Equinox 2021: The Astrological New Year

March 20, 2021 Spring Equinox Chart

March 20, 2021 is the Spring Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and Fall Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere. On the Equinox, there is an equal amount of daylight and darkness on all points of the Earth’s surface. Because of the 23.5 degrees tilt of the Earth’s axis, the Northern Hemisphere is now pointing slightly towards the Sun, whereas from the Fall Equinox, it is pointing slightly away from the Sun. Spring Equinox or Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, is considered the astrological new year.

I live in the Northern Hemisphere, so this is the perspective I am writing from. When I look at the chart for the Equinox, I am actually quite optimistic about these energies. With so many sextiles and trines in this chart, we have an opportunity to experience more flow now. After the past 14 months where it felt like walking in quicksand, I am really looking forward to more flow.

Sun moves into Aries, joining Chiron, Ceres, and Eris in Aries. The Sun moves into Aries, where it is exalted. Aries is the first sign of the Zodiac, and it is a fire sign, a sign of Spirit, passion, drive, and the will to be. We emerge from Pisces, the last sign of the Zodiac, the collective unconscious, the Ocean of Oneness, as a unique spark of Creation with a will to express a unique facet of divinity. With Chiron, Ceres, and Eris all in Aries as well, there is a real opportunity for healing. Every time we repress, deny, or suppress an authentic part of ourselves out of a fear of being rejected because of our uniqueness, we become wounded. But with Chiron in Aries giving us the power to alchemize our wounds and let them become our greatest gifts, Ceres in Aries giving us the power of nurturance and care of ourselves and our authenticity, and Eris in Aries giving us the power of a spiritual warrior for authenticity and truth, there is a lot of support for deep soul healing.

The Sun is conjunct Venus in Pisces. Venus is traveling on the other side of the Sun, so we can no longer see it in the sky. Venus is considered to be in the Underworld right now. Venus will exactly conjunct the Sun on March 26, after it moves into Aries. Venus conjunct the Sun is a sweet energy, the energy of earthly love and our personal values infusing what fuels our lives with meaning and vitality.

The Sun in Aries in a separating sextile to Pluto in Capricorn. There is an opportunity for deep transformation with this aspect. Aries urges you to be authentically you and Capricorn is the determination to see something through. Have you done the healing necessary so that your authentic essence can shine through you?

Saturn in Aquarius square Uranus in Taurus. I wrote an entire post about Saturn square Uranus, because it is the most important astrological transit of 2021. Saturn is square Uranus three times this year: February 17; June 14, when Saturn is retrograde; and December 23, when Uranus is retrograde. However, they are essentially square all throughout 2021 and 2022, coming within only one degree of exact square next year. These two planets are setting a tone for these next two years. I believe they are asking us to consider a different way of being human. Clearly the way we have been doing things has not been working for a large majority of us (human, as well as all fellow inhabitants of Earth, and the Earth herself). Squares require a change in direction, a 90 degree departure from the current trajectory. We are being challenged to be greater, more creative, more loving, more compassionate, more determined, more disciplined, and to tell a new story about what it means to be human. Why can’t we care for ourselves, each other, and the planet? Why isn’t there plenty for everyone? Why can’t we be more loving, peaceful, heart coherent, collaborative, cooperative, and community-oriented? Why can’t we be more health-focused and life-affirming? Why can’t we forgive ourselves and each other, clean up our collective mess, and move forward with faith in a brighter future for all? Why don’t we at least give it a try? I believe the astrology is inviting us to step into a greater expression of what it means to be human.

Jupiter in Aquarius square Black Moon Lillith in Taurus. Expansive and optimistic Jupiter in a tense aspect with Black Moon Lillith. Our optimism about the future is tempered by the reality of how we mistreat and even disown things we don’t want to look at, the shadows within ourselves that get projected onto the external world. As within, so without, and there is much abuse we need to acknowledge and repair. There is so much damage we inflict upon Mother Earth, and it is a reflection of how much healing we as a collective humanity have to do. But it is possible, and though squares are tense, they are also opportunities to grow. Once you are confronted with the reality that you cannot continue going the way you are going, you are given the opportunity to course correct and go down another road, perhaps one that will take you somewhere you didn’t even know was possible you could go.

Mars in Gemini in an approaching conjunction with the North Node in Gemini and opposite the South Node in Sagittarius. With Mars approaching its conjunction to the North Node in Gemini, we are being asked to live life in a more open, playful, and curious way. You are probably being faced with at least two choices of how to move forward in your life, and the best way to determine the best course of action is to see how your choices feel in your body. Imagine living out each choice as you notice how that feels in your body. Which one feels more joyous, expansive, and open? Mars in Gemini gleefully leaps into the unknown with faith, because ultimately, you cannot know everything (South Node in Sagittarius). There is always another perspective and something new to learn and discover (North Node in Gemini).

The Moon is also conjunct Mars and the North Node in Gemini at the Equinox. This is extremely significant, as the Moon travels so fast around the Zodiac. The Moon in Gemini is opening us up even more to new perspectives, information, and data. We don’t know everything, and keeping an open mind will allow us to transcend past patterns and conditioning that may be holding us back from fully expressing our unique and brilliant selves.

The Moon in Gemini is also approaching a trine to Jupiter in Aquarius. This can give us a boost to be more open, expansive, and optimistic about the future. Perhaps give us some inspiration for how to move forward into the future in a more collaborative, cooperative, and community-centered way.

Mars in Gemini in an approaching trine to Saturn in Aquarius. This is a wonderful energy for taking action towards your future. Mars in Gemini has been presenting you with options, and hopefully, with your open mind and playful curiosity, you have been moving forward with faith, and with Saturn in Aquarius, you have the added determination, discipline, and dedication to do what you know will move your life forward. And remembering that there are no mistakes but only missed opportunities, take that leap and know the net will appear.

North Node in Gemini in an approaching trine to Saturn in Aquarius with the South Node in Sagittarius in a sextile with Saturn. As the North Node trines Saturn, the South Node will sextile Saturn. This is also great energy for moving forward into the future, and all that is required is an open-mind and a playful curiosity, letting go of the need to be “right.”

Venus in Pisces in a separating sextile with Pluto in Capricorn. Venus is deepening the transformation available to us right now. What are you learning about what you value and love in your life? How can you deepen your relationship to yourself, because ultimately, the relationship you have with yourself determines the quality of everything else in your life.

Mercury in Pisces in an approaching sextile to Uranus in Taurus. Mercury in Pisces is creative and imaginative thinking, and Uranus in Taurus is a revolution in how we treat our bodies, our resources, and the Earth. What would we dream up for ourselves and the world if anything was possible?

Mercury in Pisces approaching a square with Mars in Gemini. Mercury in Pisces is caught up in its own world, floating out in dreamland, imagining, creating, and very intuitive square to Mars in Gemini, which is open, curious, and experimental. Though squares can be tense aspects, I believe this Mercury square Mars will give you an extra boost of creativity and imagination to move forward in your life. Let your intuition guide you now. This is about how things feel. What feels like the best choice? What feels the most expansive in your body? Think about your choices to see how they feel, and the one that feels the best, the most “right” to you, is the one to follow through on. The body check works for any communications you may have during this time as well. If it doesn’t feel right to you, then don’t say it or do it.

All in all, this is great energy for healing the past and moving forward into the future, with openness, faith, and optimism that we can create a better world for ourselves, and consequently, the world at large. Happy Equinox!
