Saturn in Aquarius is approaching its square with Uranus in Taurus on February 17, for the first of three exact squares in 2021. The second square is on June 14, when Saturn is retrograde and the third square is on December 23, when Uranus is retrograde. However, they are essentially square all throughout 2021 and 2022, coming within only one degree of exact square next year. These two planets are setting a tone for these next two years.
I know Saturn square Uranus well as it is a daily reality for me. My Saturn in Leo is square my Uranus in Scorpio by less than half of a degree. On top of their square, they are also conjunct my natal axis, Uranus being conjunct my Ascendant in Scorpio and Saturn being conjunct my Midheaven in Leo. I won’t sugarcoat this aspect and say it has been easy. It has been one of my biggest life challenges to reconcile these two energies. But it has also been so worthwhile because now that I have, they are each contributing to a more authentic expression of me. What is Saturn in Aquarius square Uranus in Taurus asking us to learn?
Before we really dive into the planets and signs, let’s do a dive into the power of our language. Every word you write or speak is putting a spell on you and your reality, for good or ill. First I want to look at freedom and sovereignty. They are both empowering words. But you have to claim your sovereignty, your divine birthright to rule over yourself, your body, and your life before you can have real freedom; freedom of thought, belief, emotion, feeling, word, and deed. Next let’s look at boundaries and limitations. Boundary is a barrier, a line in the sand, a hard stop, a divine no, you will not cross this threshold energy. A limitation is something that limits your possibilities. Being an infinite being, you could experience everything, but you did not incarnate to experience everything. You incarnated as you to experience you, and so you intentionally limited yourself. Understanding limitations in this way, we can more powerfully work with our own limitations, accepting what we cannot change. Through this understanding, we also know what can be changed and seek an ever greater expression of ourselves.
Saturn in Aquarius in its highest expression is the one who is a master of themselves and their own energies. You know your boundaries and don’t allow anything or anyone to cross those boundaries without an invitation. How can you really live an authentic life if you don’t know yourself? If you aren’t thinking your own thoughts, feeling your own feelings, saying what is in your heart, and acting from your own internal compass, then who are you? Are you your family, your friends, your culture, your country, your religion? Are you just regurgitating something you heard on the TV or read on the Internet? Who is living your life? We cannot fully contribute our unique energies and gifts to the world unless we are completely authentic. We can only be authentic by knowing who we are and who we are not, and that is where we use our Saturn to set those boundaries and know our true limits.
Uranus in Taurus in its highest expression is not just about the freedom to authentically be, but our birthright to be sovereign beings. You incarnated as you to be and do you, and no one else has the right to tell you who that is. Only you can figure out who that is and embody it. Anyone who has ever been shocked by a Uranus transit knows that Uranus will rip the rug out from under you, but that on the other side of the shock, you realize that you have never felt better, more authentically you, or more free. Taurus is our health, our body, our values, our physical life. Uranus in Taurus is really asking us to consider what we value, asking us to revolutionize the way we treat ourselves, each other, and the planet we all call home.
Saturn square Uranus is asking us to consider a different way of being human. Clearly the way we have been doing things has not been working for a large majority of us (human, as well as all fellow inhabitants of Earth, and the Earth herself). Squares require a change in direction, a 90 degree departure from the current trajectory. We are being challenged to be greater, more creative, more loving, more compassionate, more determined, more disciplined, and to tell a new story about what it means to be human. Why can’t we care for ourselves, each other, and the planet? Why isn’t there plenty for everyone? Why can’t we be more loving, peaceful, heart coherent, collaborative, cooperative, and community-oriented? Why can’t we be more health-focused and life-affirming? Why can’t we forgive ourselves and each other, clean up our collective mess, and move forward with faith in a brighter future for all? Why don’t we at least give it a try? I believe the astrology is inviting us to step into a greater expression of what it means to be human.
